The Raid World Championship 2005
Team Finland Take an Early Lead
Rob Howard / 10.09.2005

By the time the leaders reached the first transition at a small camp site on the eastern shore of the lake it was already very hot, but Team Finland, who came in first looked untroubled and were paddling smoothly. There was a big crowd waiting and the whole shore line was crammed with support crews, friends and family and media, who all gave a rousing round of applause as Finland came in. This will be the busiest transition, from here on the teams will be much more spread out.
Just behind Finland came Nike ACG Balance Bar, who appeared to be working much harder, then the bright yellow vests of Ertips and then Balance Vector. Montrail Revo and Saab Salomon were further back and Les Arcs Quechua surprisingly in middle of the field. They are usually strong paddlers but may be making a cautious start. Given the heat of the day and the long climb ahead, over 3000m in total, that might be a wise strategy.
Teams took time at transition to drink, apply sun cream, grab hats and buffs, and fill bladders and bottles, and many set off with trekking poles. At the exit to the camp site some tuned left, others right, as the initial route was not clear, but within an hour all had come and gone, and the race was well underway.
