7:50 pm: Simon River Sports is in the Lead

- The race started on time at noon today.
- They have just spent about 8 hours in the rain and are now heading in to darkness cold & wet.
- Simon River Sports has completed the first paddling section in 1st Place. Approximately 10 minutes back is Gearsracing.com. Followed by Fudugazi and Wild Rose an additional 10 minutes back.
- There haven't really been any route choices at this stage, but as they head in to the trek to ropes section through the night, teams will likely take a variety of routes. Of note, a trail shown on their maps that follows the river to the ropes doesn't really exist in the real world. It does lead initially to a lake, but is so over grown, that teams will likely have some frustration at night with this portion of the race. Lead teams are expected to take about 3.5 hours to get to the ropes.
- Everyone is racing safe and healthy at this point. Tree Huggers did start the race with a bit of a deficit as Wayne has some gastrointestinal problems he brought back with him from Europe and Barb has an injured knee from an orienteering event.
- There are some upcoming dark zones in this race, so racing strategy will play a part in this.
- An upcoming bike section will likely play the cruz of the race. It is 80km with only one checkpoint in the middle. Teams have a huge variety of roads that they can take for this section. Some of the roads may or may not exist.
