Eco Motion Brazil 2005
Sunny Start to EcoMotion Brasil
Susan McKenzie / 02.10.2005

The sun is shining, the birds are chirping (really, they are) and the Hotel Serrano in Gramado is bursting with adventure racers and their support crews. The lower floors bear more of a resemblance to an upscale bike shop than to an upscale hotel, with mountain bikes of all styles lining both sides of the hallways.
The race begins in about six hours (4pm local time, 2pm Eastern, 7pm GMT) and the start is a good three hour drive away (of course), along some twisty roads that lead down to the coast, and the starting line at Largada.
Before the start, each team must select one member to do the rappel and one to do safety. Once all the racers are down, the real race begins - all 440 kilometres of it.
The competition here is stiff - strong teams from all over the world have converged on this relatively unknown region of Brazil. As usual, the weather and how the teams react to it will play a pivotal role in determining who wins.
