Racing in the middle of the pack, more than a day after the winners have crossed the finish line can be tough, but Discovery is anything but disheartened. Its support crew has hot pizza waiting, and he runs around snapping photos and buying water as the team changes into warmer gear, and eats pizza.
Team Discovery could easily be called Team Photo Opportunity.
“We have about four hundred photos on our camera, says David Darby.
“Yeah, some really great shots in the canyons and on that last rafting section, adds Neal Radford.
“This Brazilian team actually passed us on the rapids, because we kept taking all these pictures, laughs Jody Zwicky. \"We told them to go ahead and they thought we were crazy\"
At one point in the rafting, the teams hit a slalom course. Discovery (naturally) decided not just to pass through the course but actually run it.
\"There were these people on the bridge, and they couldn\'t figure out why were going through the gates, hitting all the poles.\" says Neil Radford.
As the team cycles out of town, Zwicky takes time out. \"I really want to see what the front of this church looks like,\" she says.
Discovery currently sits in fifteenth place. The team hopes to finish the race tonight, which may well mean skipping the waterfall rappel and taking the stairs. If they want to do the 130-metre rappel, they would have to wait until daylight.
“We’ll decide when we get there, says Radford.
(Ed. Note: Discovery crossed the finish at 3am Friday, and let two teams pass them on the final bike leg. \"They thought we were nuts, too,\" says Zwicky. Team Photo Op\'s photos will be posted on sleepmonsters soon.)
