British Adventure Racing Championship Final
White Water Action
Rob / 01.10.2002

The rafting stage at Canolfan Tryweryn may have been slow to get going, but once underway everyone had a fantastic time. Teams were set off in the order they’d arrived at the centre, (i.e. leaders first) and after safety briefings were bussed up to the start of the run, a point just below the outlet dam of Llyn Celyn. Water for the centre is released from here under controlled conditions and sent down the Tryweryn river to create one of the steepest white water runs in the UK. There are boulders, rapids and drops all the way down and each team had 2 runs with a guide, the first was a practice run and the second was timed. Times aren’t available yet but they were under 4 minutes for the 2km run - though no one was too concerned about minor time differences, they were having too much fun. The gallery pictures tell the story.
Two teams did opt not to do the run. With the wait, bussing up and down, briefings and kitting out etc. it was a long stop and Dynamic Adventure Enterprise and Thomas Cook made the tactical decision to go on. The penalty is twice the rafting time (so only a few minutes) and they will have much more daylight for the mountain biking ahead and may get more rest before the final kayak stage begins. Thomas Cook also needed to get to the next transition as they didn’t enough bike lights. It was a smart move, but they missed a memorable rafting trip.
