The Raid World Championship 2006
Top Positions Still Close .... and Sleep Times Are Crucial
Susan McKenzie / 10.09.2006

“Our guys made one mistake on the paddle, it cost them about half an hour or so, Saab Salomon team manager (and support crew) Tim Lloyd recounts. They saw a point in the distance and thought that was where they had to go. But Nike made the same mistake, and some other people too.
Once off the water, teams had a quick bike ride to connect to the first serious trekking section, a 30 kilometre trek with an elevation gain of 535 metres.
Saab Salomon may have made a mistake on the water, but earlier today, on the first trekking section the team was sure footed, strong and fast as it made it way through the trees, along the muddy, rocky trail. Like most of the top teams, they had slept four of the 27 hours mandated by the race organization.
It was a great day for hike, and we were able to move up beyond the ski hill onto the trekking section. GoLite Timberland was the first team to pass us, and the only team to pass us twice. They came tearing past us at a run, only to make the return journey about five minutes later.
“There’s no bridge over that way, Isaac Wilson said. “We have to go a different way.
