The Start of the 8th World Rogaining Championships

The 8th World Rogaining Championships are being held in Estonia this weekend and are now underway. Altogether 784 competitors started from the competition centre a few minutes ago at 11.00 CET. The “human wave divided into three major groups each of them trying to carry through their optimal route choice.

During the race most of them will be back in the competition centre, which combines a car park, tenting area, 50m long eating tent and an open air restaurant. This is all needed to offer competitors a necessary break in the 24 hour race. Some of the stronger competitors will most probably not utilize this possibility in order to win a few more points meaning that they will be out on the terrain the entire 24 hour period. Let’s hope that everything runs smoothly for the organizers and competitors from now on.

The most important part of the race preparation – the control placements – are in their proper locations in the forest and competitors are now choosing their routes.

According to the course vetters it will not be a race of simple decisions and pure running speed. By making the right choices one could choose a route crossing terrain with good visibility. The running speed will most probably also be defined by the choice of route as the terrain is highly variable – the marshes are wet, the hills small but there are hundreds of them and there are numerous wooded areas thick enough to reduce speed remarkably. For sure we will hear about these from the competitors after the race!

As for the competition all the main trophy candidates are racing, there were no late cancellations among so it seems that the competition will be intense.

We will come back with more precise news from 8th World Rogaing Championships in Estonia after the race.
