Project Athena Grand Canyon hike
Day 2: Together we are strong
Jacqueline Windh / 04.10.2009

Yesterday, we had made it from South Rim to North Rim in what Robyn called her “best-case scenarioâ€Â? time - which meant that she had a better idea of our group's speed for Day 2, and gave us an extra hour to sleep in: breakfast at 5am, rather than 4! We were all booked into comfortable heated motel rooms and cabins on the chilly North Rim; upon arrival, we showered and ate quickly, and were back in our rooms by 8pm, thrilled with the idea that we would have more than eight hours in those comfy beds!
Today's route would descend via the Nort Kaibab trail - the same one we had climbed the afternoon before - but instead of coming back up the Bright Angel Trail, we would ascend along the shorter but steeper South Kaibab Trail. This would make for a total 23 mile day, as opposed to yesterday's 27 miles. Two of our group were satisfied with the yesterday's accomplishment of having crossed the canyon one-way, and opted to help Princess Kris with rounding up the baggage and driving it back around the canyon to the South Rim. The rest of us set out in darkness again, on a morning even colder and windier than the previous one (the North Rim is 1000' higher than the South Rim).
