Gore-Tex Transalpine-Run
Leading Teams Untouchable: Top Ranks Unchanged
News Release / 06.09.2010

British runners Andrew Symonds and Tom Owens provided another demonstration of utter dominance on this second day of the 2010 GORE-TEX® TRANSALPINE-RUN.
They reached the finish line in the resort community of Kitzbühel in under three hours (02:59.51). By 11am they had covered the respectable distance of 33,2 km and a taxing vertical gain of 1,810 m. The second team across the line, Germans Matt Dippacher and Christian Stork (ORTHOMOL SPORT TEAM, 03:16.13 hours) also called it a remarkably short day but ended up spending 16 more minutes on the trail than the British dominators.
That performance cemented their current hold on the second overall rank as they managed to stay four minutes ahead of their closest pursuers – once again Spaniards Santiago Fernandez Obaya and Juan Martinez Fuego (TEAM AVIENTU 1). The latter managed a comfortable pre-noon finish as well with their time of 03:20.31 hours –leaving plenty of time for recovery.
Mixed teams ready to divvy up top ranks already?
Bluebird skies and the ski slopes of world-renowned Hahnenkamm ski area set the stage for today’s repeat victory by Angela Mudge and Chunky Liston from Great Britain. Racing by name of SALOMON TRAIL TEAM MIXED, the two reached Kitzbühel as the fifth team overall (03:28.41) - winning yet another set of leaders jerseys in the Mixed category.
Their fellow countrymen, Iona Robertson and Casey Morgan of TEAM TPC FREIGHT MANAGEMENT arrived in second place in a time of 03:35.32 hours. Gaby Steigmeier and Seppi Neuhauser of the Swiss-Austrian TEAM SALOMON (03:36.36) trailed them by a mere minute – a stellar performance that secured them the remaining podium place once more.
Leading Women’s team issues repeat performance
Italians Martina Pfeifhofer and Elisabeth Egarter of TEAM SEXTEN SALOMON demonstrated their class by managing to keep well ahead of the competition today. They arrived in Kitzbühel after 04:09.51 hours. By comparison, second-ranked Italian TEAM LATSCH around Irene Senfter and Edeltraud Thaler had a tougher go in fighting off their closest pursuers. Although claiming second place by crossing the finish line in 04:19.57 hours they had Germans Gitti Schiebel and Eva Übelhör (TEAM MOUNTAIN HEROES) literally breathing down their necks (04:20.40).
Tried and trusted Masters team finishes first
Anton Philipp and Thomas Miksch were already regulars on the podium in last year’s race and they seem set on maintaining that routine. In turn, the two German runners made sure to arrive first in their category and were able to kick back under the Kitzbühel sun after a mere 03:21.27 hours on the trail.
That performance allowed them a quarter of an hour to cool off before welcoming second-placing Florian Eberle and Uli Morgen of TEAM GESUNDHEITSCHECK (03:36.08) at the finish line. Third in place was the Spanish TEAM BUFF. Newbies to the podium, Juanjo Checa Alonso and Chemari Rodriguez Bustillo were thrilled to advance in the overall ranking with a stellar performance of 03:47.41 hours.
Winning Senior Masters team maintains lead with four-hour run
Gerald Blumrich and Jörg Schreiber handily hung on to their leader jerseys on today’s stage. Their time of 03:59.33 hours also placed them 21st in the overall ranking of teams, which is all the more impressive given the strong field of teams taking part.
