Ussher crossed the line after more than eight hours of brutal but beautiful racing through the Avon and Swan Valleys, having run, ridden and paddled a distance of 158km.
The Kiwi endurance athlete faced down an early charge on the bike leg from local hope, elite triathlete Sean O’Neill, to dominate the race from the first bike leg onwards, coming home only ten minutes after the team category winners, Perth crew Crank’n Cycles.
Victorious members from Crank’n Cycles included the winner of the Perth Marathon completing the trail run sections and the state time trials (bike) champion cranking out the two road cycling legs. Demonstrating the calibre of athlete he is, Ussher at one stage maintained the overall lead, only being overtaken by Crank’n Cycles paddler on the second kayak leg.
Once back in front, Crankin Cycles pushed on to eventually crack the eight hour barrier, finishing in 7 hours 59 minutes and 21 seconds, an astonishing effort given the distance and tough terrain battled by all 380 competitors.
