Raid International Gaspésie 2014
The Raid International Gaspésie: Outstanding Athletes And Stories!
Press Release / 10.09.2014

From September 10th to 14th, the coastal city of Carleton-sur-Mer, located in the beautiful Gaspésie region in Quebec (Canada), will be the theatre for a sports event hosting outstanding international athletes.
Those people are a little crazier than the average and will take part in an Adventure Race in which they must surpass themselves as they will have to cover a distance of 300 km in a 4 days period.
The teams on the starting line are multisport athletes who can do everything, in any conditions, with a minimum gear. They will need an unbreakable team spirit as the hardest challenge in this kind of adventure is to overcome psychological more than physical obstacles (even though these latter are not to be minimized). To get through, they have to show an incredible capacity to adpat and the experienced adventure racers know that: they have to expect anything but what was predicted.
The Raid International Gaspésie is not an Adventure Race with a well marked and calculated route with pre-established supply points… You won’t find anybody along the road to give you some power bars or sun cream. The teams will have to rely on their expertise, their judgment, on the trust in their teammates, and race with nature and the conditions and not against them. A good racing strategy has to take into account the selection of equipment, the itineraries, and to skilfully manage sleep and the food. All the teammates must be in a range of 100 metres from each other at all times.
Furthermore, the Raid International Gaspésie stands out by the diversity of the teams that will be on the starting line. Among them: some international champions of adventure races, Ironman triathlete champions, even a cycling champion in the person of Lyne Bessette, some World Cup Mountain bikers, along with non-professional adventure sport athletes. The participants come from South Africa, France, Ireland, UK, Uruguay, Costa Rica, Argentina, United States, Italy, Brazil in addition to Canada that also has a team from arctic Nunavik.
The goal of such an adventure is to push the limits while crossing wild terrain, to develop a good team spirit all throughout the race and to stay united, physically and psychologically. Teamwork and spirit are vital in the best and worst moments. The best might be when arriving on the top of a mountain with the most beautiful view, navigating on a crystal clear river, or crossing huge wild forests and the worst could be when one is thinking of giving up the race, when tired in bad weather, or while being in freezing water or tied to a rope while going down a 100 metres high cliff, or lost in a path going nowhere.
To go through this, trust between the team members, sharing and humility are essential. The teams doing the RIG will live extreme emotions, huge joys, anxious moments, adrenaline rushes, and they will cross the finish line with a feeling of pride that they will share with others for a very long time.
It will be possible to follow the race “live” through the website www.raidinternationalgaspesie.com and SleepMonsters will have regular news and updates.
