Raid International Gaspésie 2014
Day 1: Smoked Salmon and Bushwhacking
Press Release / 13.09.2014

Day 1 of the Raid International Gaspésie : different strategies according to the teams, but all of them finished with the same smile!
The start of Day 1 of the Raid International Gaspésie was given this morning at 9.30 at the Middle Camp, on the shores of the Cascapédia River : after having done 3 control points in the forest around, the teams paddled down the Cascapedia River. This day was full of great challenges like a rope section over the canyon of the Anger River, river crossing, mountain bikes in very deep bush walking and a lot of canoe!
Many different strategies were adopted to respond to different situations : the Yoga Slackers for instance decided to cross the Cascapedia, swimming, as a shortcut, and the Young Bucks of Inukjuak, when they saw that their assistance crew was not there at a transition of canoe to bush walking... decided to go ahead and do the bush walking with their wetsuit shoes!
There is a great team spirit among the different teams : this is the « Canadian spirit » according to the team Costa Rica, as they have been taken out of trouble by a Canadian team when their canoe tipped over a few kms before the arrival and was stuck in the bottom of the river under a dead log. The raiders all agree to say that this is one of the toughest adventure race they have done, but also one of the most pleasant! The teams were welcomed at the Micmac Camp by a drum and traditional dancing show and very tasty smoked salmon cooked in a cedar wood stump.
After 2 days of racing, it's the Canadian team Dynafit p/b XactNutrition that is ahead overall for the 300K race, followed by the French team Trails Endurance Mag and by team Mundial, the team of Lyne Bessette. For the 150K race, the Italian team Pedini-Iret is leading and is followed by the local team les GalopeuXtreme and by another Canadian team: Charlebois-April.
